The cocoa farmers in Ikom Local Government area of Cross River State have been highly sensitized by the President of the Cocoa Association of Nigeria, Mr. Sayina Riman to take part in the on-going cocoa farmers’ registration going on in all the cocoa producing States Nationwide.
The sensitization exercise which was held in Ikom, Cross River State took place on Tuesday September 10th, 2013 and witnessed a huge turn-out of cocoa farmers in the area.
Speaking during the exercise, Mr. Riman intimated the need for the farmers to take part in the on-going registration exercise to enable them partake in the soft loan facilities of The Nigerian Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL) for cocoa farmers.
According to Mr. Riman, Ikom stands to be one of the major cocoa producing areas in the country and thereby urged an active participation of cocoa farmers to take up the opportunity being presented to them to register their cocoa farms as only registered farmers whose names appear in the database can benefit from the package.
In his own words, “The Cocoa Association of Nigeria (CAN) is working in line with the Agricultural Transformation Agenda being put in place by the Honourable Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Akinwumi Adesina in transforming the entire cocoa value chain.”
He however urged that only farmers who owns and operates their own cocoa farms should register their names as the database collation exercise is also aimed at targeting the number of cocoa farmers Nationwide.
